Component 4

Fuel tanks for fixed installations and flexible pipes / fuel sleeves

The design requirements shall be met, the materials to be used, the construction, installation on-board, testing of permanently installed fuel/fuel systems, including all necessary parts for fuels such as petrol and diesel, from the loading receptacle through the fixed storage tanks to the point of entry into the internal combustion engine both of propulsion  (inboard and/or inboard outboard/outboard) and auxiliary for other services.

The main rules to be respected are as follows:

UNI EN ISO 10088: 2013 the harmonised standard specifies the requirements for the design, materials, construction, installation and testing of permanent fuel installations installed for internal combustion engines

ISO 7840: 2013  harmonised standard specifying general requirements and physical/chemical tests for fire-resistant flexible hoses for petrol or petrol blended with ethanol and diesel or diesel fuel blended with biodiesel (FAME)

UNI EN ISO 21487: 2013+A1 2014 + A2 2016   harmonized design standard means the testing of petrol and diesel tanks permanently installed in recreational or watercraft for the supply of internal combustion engines

Please Note: Flexible pipes installed in engine compartments shall be fire resistant of type A1 or A2 according to the above-mentioned standard.

Fuel systems shall be equipped with at least a fuel filter that can be on board the engine.

Gas oil supply systems shall be equipped with a fuel filter and water separator;

All such devices shall be labelled or marked with:

  • manifacturer's name
  • ISO 1088  fire resistant
  • type of fuel for which they are usable.

Each fire-resistant hose shall be marked to conform to the above standard,  at least every 0,3 m, with:

  • the name or mark of the manufacturer or supplier;
  • the last two digits of the year of manufacture;
  • “ISO 7840 – A1” o “ISO 7840 – A2”
  • E 10 (for petrol)  o B10 (for diesel), as prescribed in the standard

Marking letters and numbers shall be at least 3 mm high and shall withstand washing with common detergents.

The marking may contain additional information.

Please note: for LPG supply systems to petrol/diesel propulsion engines of recreational units, yachts and other units, with hull length up to 24m. , the harmonised standard should apply  UNI EN15609:2012 according to instructions still to be defined with appropriate decree  , as indicated in the new code of the nautical one from pleasure crafts in update.
